Diddy: From Harlem to Howard, A Commencement Speech That Will Be Remembered

By  |  0 Comments

Before becoming a record label executive, leader in the wine and spirits industry, the owner of REVOLT and more, Sean Combs was a student at Howard University. Now over 20 years after the mogul left Howard’s yard in hot pursuit of a career that would redefine music history, Mr. Combs is headed back to Washington D.C. in two weeks to give the 2014 commencement speech at the university and receive an honorary doctorate degree.

The university has received a lot of attention for choosing Mr. Combs as this year’s commencement speaker because he is a cultural icon, but some wonder if he’s actually fit to speak at a college graduation.  A lot of criticism has come into play because the mogul left Howard University prematurely and has a history connected to hip hop, which in the eyes of some is misogynistic and plays up the negative stereotypes of Black men.  Fortunately, Mr. Combs isn’t going to Howard as a rapper, he is going to Howard University’s campus as a man that has changed how the world views music business, television, culture, spirits and social media.

Now, it may not be so obvious how the mogul has used social media to leverage everything from Ciroc to the launch of REVOLT, he is also using social media to connect with the same people he’ll be speaking to at this graduation by asking Howard University students to let him know what they would like him to talk about via Twitter and Instagram.

Every great commencement speaker has a past, and many great speakers of this time haven’t graduated college, but that fact alone doesn’t make their experiences as people or professionals any less valid or inspiring. And as always, this proves that Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs can’t stop and won’t stop.
