Angie Martinez Resigns From Hot 97

Today was a bittersweet day for NYC radio because Hot 97’s Angie Martinez, also known as “The Voice of New York” resigned just before her last show via Instagram.

The shocking post read:

Today I resigned from HOT97. I am grateful to the Emmis family for my time with the company and the immeasurable way that it has shaped my life. We made history together in so many ways and I will cherish those memories and my friendships forever. This was one of the toughest decisions I’ve ever had to make but ultimately it is time to move on, to grow and to be challenged in new ways. Saying goodbye is always emotional and bitter sweet but I am extremely excited about the future. Thank you HOT97 and most importantly….the listeners… for an unimaginable journey. Today will be my last show ❤️ stay tuned…. Love, angie

When this news hit Instagram and then the airwaves, loyal fans near and far on Twitter expressed their shock, sadness and connection to Angie Martinez. She, like many other of the familiar voices on Hot 97 is a voice that has narrated hip hop’s story for almost two decades, and with her staple  Afternoon Drive show weekdays from 3-7, she is truly irreplaceable.

It should also be noted that Hot 97’s competition, Power 105.1 retweeted Martinez’s announcement adding a smiley face before it. The Breakfast Club’s Charlamagne Tha God also tweeted that it’s a sad day for radio because Martinez is one of the best to ever do it. Now, Charlamagne’s comment isn’t strange, but the retweet from Power 105.1 has folks speculating and thinking that Angie Martinez may actually be heading to the station.

Regardless of whether or not Angie Martinez takes on digital media, TV or another radio station, it’s clear that she will only go up from this point and continue to move and shape the culture.
