Zendaya Will No Longer Play Aaliyah

After an amazing high and taking the role that could change her life, Zendaya has backed out of the Aaliyah biopic due to controversy surrounding the film and out of respect for the late singer’s family.

Aaliyah’s legacy has always been protected by the Haughton family since the time of her death in order to truly protect the integrity of her music and image. Because the Lifetime biopic was unauthorized, they blocked the usage of her music for the film and were also disappointed because they felt that she was too big to have her life played out on the small screen.

Zendaya hasn’t said much about backing out besides the following:

I feel like there were certain things that were missing and things that weren’t 100 percent taken care of.  I feel like if I’m going to portray one of my idols and someone that I feel so important and strongly about, it has to be done right. It has to be done 120 percent, so I felt like it wasn’t there, so it just wasn’t a good choice for me.

Best of luck to Zendaya on all of her future endeavors.
