When it comes to politics and culture, music has always been a way that artists have gotten through to the public. J. Cole is the latest rapper to use his musical platform for greater awareness.

This morning he released the song, “Be Free” in honor Mike Brown, the teen from Ferguson, Missouri that had been shot and killed last weekend by a police officer.  The song speaks to the issue of injustice in today’s society and Cole had this message under the song on his Soundcloud file:

“Rest in Peace to Michael Brown and to every young black man murdered in America, whether by the hands of white or black. I pray that one day the world will be filled with peace and rid of injustice. Only then will we all Be Free – Cole”

He was also joined by Elle Varner who recorded and released a song in Brown’s honor.
