An extended cut of Nicki Minaj’s Pepsi commercial landed online this weekend, and a remix of the rapper/singer’s “Moment for Life” provides the soundtrack to a video that features a couple quite literally living in a series of frozen moments.

The beverage company revealed plans to feature Minaj last week, announcing her campaign in conjunction with a Michael Jackson-focused global ad sprint. The latter component will feature remixes of Jackson’s songs by A-Trak and other DJ’s.

In 1984, Jackson’s hair caught on fire while filming an advertisement for Pepsi. The resulting trauma the late King of Pop suffered is often cited as the beginning of a long and debilitating addiction to painkillers. The upcoming promotional materials were made possible by a deal between Pepsi and Jackson’s estate.

“Live for Now,” the overarching campaign, underscores Pepsi’s attempt at re-associating itself with pop culture. The company has a lot riding on the advertisements, as its marquee beverage was recently knocked out of the No. 2 spot, behind Diet Coke (Coke remains the top soda).

Interestingly, the Minaj spot is available in 3-D on YouTube. The site offers many viewing options, including a “no glasses” option that reveals the 3-D visuals when one watches the video “cross eyed” (that’s the term YouTube ascribed to the option). In case you have some 3-D glasses lying around, you can also tune the clip to red/cyan, blue/yellow or green/magenta settings. What a world!

After weeks of speculation, Maybach Music Group (MMG) head Rick Ross announced today (May 2) that he has signed former B2K singer and actor, Omarion, to his growing label roster.

The announcement of the Omarion addition was made at an invitation-only press conference at New York City’s Eventi Hotel. Label representatives, press, and industry tastemakers were on-hand to welcome the new artist to the roster that includes Rick Ross, Meek Mill, Wale, Masspike Miles, Teedra Moses, and others. MMG is distributed through Warner Bros. Records.

Lyor Cohen, North American Chairman and CEO for Warner Music Group, spoke at the event about Rick Ross’ growing roster, saying, “He’s not satisfied. There’s no stopping him. The possibilities that Rick and Maybach Music bring is unprecedented.

“He reminded me, he’s got the biggest office in the world, and that’s the streets. I don’t know anybody that can stop this guy,” Cohen said of Rick Ross.
Rick Ross gave an impromptu press conference interview with Rap Radar’s Elliott Wilson, and producer Swizz Beatz spoke about his friendship with Ross and how he helped him get his deal with Reebok.

Omarion has been spotted with rapper Ma$e in the studio in recent weeks, prompting speculation that the two were working on new material and possibly new deals. Ma$e recently appeared on Wale’s “Slight Work” remix with Diddy and French Montana, prompting talk that he would make a return to music, perhaps under MMG.

Rumors also swirled that Ma$e would serve as an A&R representative for French Montana, whose official signing to both MMG and Bad Boy was announced to laughter at today’s press conference.

A dark cloud in urban radio just settled as 107.5 WBLS and 98.7 Kiss FM made it public that the two stations shall very soon become one. Beginning 12:00PM Monday afternoon, they will operate solely as 107.5 FM WBLS. With such legendary Classic Soul DJ’s as Isaac Hayes, with the voice that’s hard to forget, and a radio legacy spanning 3 decades is being paid tribute throughout this entire weekend by both stations in a simulcast. According to the New York Daily News, Disney has purchased the stations in a 96 Million Dollar merger, complete with complexities, from Emmis Communications as the two stations were said to have been struggling for so long to stay afloat. Beginning in the 70’s as the voice of black radio and later redefining their sound as “urban”, Kiss’s ratings haven’t met Emmis Chairman Jeff Smulyan’s’ expectations for some time and we consumers are partial to blame for not listening enough. Classic Soul music and relativity to a black audience is what drove these stations to the top at the height of their run but in mainstreams Pop, Hip-Hop and House Music driven culture, our taste for the classics have surely subsided.

Wondering what’s to become of 98.7 FM? ESPN is anxiously awaiting the post before the static frequencies settle.
